Propaganda: Power and Persuasion

I went to the British Library to see the exhibition called "Propaganda: Power and Persuasion" yesterday.

'Propaganda ' means information, publicity, advertising, but it doesn't have a direct translation in Chinese.

Propaganda
'Propaganda' is in English is actually a very negative word.

It often means that Government or political persons promotes their thoughts or point of views to citizens,  to change their behaviour, a more serious word would mean to "brain wash".

"Propaganda is all around us. It is used to fight wars and fight disease, build unity and create division. Whether monumental or commonplace, sincere or insidious, propaganda is often surprising, sometimes horrific and occasionally humorous. While it’s never neutral, it can be difficult to define and identify.

Propaganda: Power and Persuasion is the first exhibition to explore international state propaganda from the 20th and 21st centuries. From the eye-opening to the mind-boggling, from the beautiful to the surprising, posters, films, cartoons, sounds and texts reveal the myriad ways that states try to influence and persuade their citizens.

Exploring a thought-provoking range of exhibits, you will find yourselves looking anew at the messages, methods, and media used by different states - discovering how they use propaganda through time and across cultures for both power and persuasion" (www.bl.uk)

In this exhibition, there are many 'propaganda' used by the US, Germany, Sovelt Union (Russia), also Japan, Korea, and China.

The main methods used to circulate were posters, postcards, leaflets, portrait/paintings, cigarette cards etc.

Radio was also widely produced at the war time as it was the cheapest method to reach people.
