"The September Issue" of Vogue

Yesterday, in Managing Creative Team class, we had 2 options of documantary films to watch. One was "The September Issue" by R.J. Cutler, a 2009 American documentary film about the behind-the-scenes drama that follows editor-in-chief Anna Wintour and her staff during the production of the September 2007documenting about how the US Vouge produced the issue, and the other was "Marc Jacobs".

I remembed the American series "Ugly Betty" and the film starring by Anne Hathaway "The Devil wears PRADA", that I always liked the the magazine environment stories. So I chose to watch "The September Issue"

Anna Wintour, was born is 1949, is the English-born editor-in-chief of American Vougue, and held the position since 1988. With her trademark bob haircut and sunglasses, Wintour has become an institution throughout the fashion world, widely praised for her eye for fashion trends and her support for younger designers.

"The film revolves around the making of the Vogue September 2007 issue. It depicts the effort that goes into making the magazine, and the passion that Grace Coddington, a former model turned creative director and the only person who dares to stand up to Anna Wintour, has for the highly-regarded fashion magazine. In the film, Coddington is often portrayed as the leading victim to Wintour's aggressive personality. However, the relationship between Wintour and Coddington reveals itself to be symbiotic as Wintour recognizes Coddington's expertise and keen eye for design. In the end, Wintour approves most of Coddington's ideas and they appear in the final version of the September issue."

In the film, showed Anna Wintour's power and control, if she does not like the outcome, then it's a NO, and Grace Coddington would have to re-do the photoshoots again. Her power and influences, is not just within the Vogue magazine, many designers is also afraid of her, such as Stefano Pilati, the creative director of Yevs Saint Laurent and Jean-Paul Gaultier. It feels that her opinion is the most important.
